Case Study
Empowering Equity Through Authentic Imagery
Client: Canadian Women and Sport
-
With only 4% of media coverage dedicated to women’s sport, underrepresentation in sports media is a significant and prevalent issue.
Recognizing the urgent need to address this disparity, Canadian Women and Sport sought to build a robust image library which would truly reflect the strength and dynamism of young female athletes.
-
Canadian Women and Sport partnered with the move movement to create a collection of authentic, impactful images showcasing girls aged 12-18 engaged in sports, accompanied by their female coaches.
These images would contribute to a shared goal: to amplify representation of women and girls in sports, and promote gender equity within sports sector leadership and participation.
-
Collaborating closely together, the move movement and Canadian Women and Sport organized three distinct photo shoots, each with a unique focus and group of athletes:
Swim Ontario: The first photo shoot centered around capturing young female able bodied and para swimmers in action, as well as their female coaches. This shoot aimed to capture the dedication, teamwork, and determination that goes into competitive swimming.
Galaxy Volleyball Club: For the second shoot, the focus shifted to girls participating in volleyball within the Galaxy Volleyball Club. The aim was to portray the spirit of camaraderie, skill development, and leadership fostered through team sports.
Girls Just Wanna Box: The third photo shoot showcased young women engaged in boxing with the Girls Just Wanna Box initiative. The objective here was to portray the empowerment, strength, and discipline that boxing can bring to young girls. -
Between the three distinct photo shoots, we were able to produce a rich and diverse collection of images capturing the power and dynamism of young female athletes.
Breaking away from traditional narrative often seen in sports media, the images have become a valuable resource for Canadian Women and Sport; offering a range of visuals that authentically represent the experience of girls in sports.
These images were made available to various media outlets, sports organizations, and educational institutions, contributing to a more accurate and inspiring portrayal of women and girls in sports.

The availability of these images not only contribute to a more accurate and inspiring portrayal of women and girls in sport, but have also fostered greater awareness, appreciation, and celebration of young female athletes.
This initiative aligned seamlessly with Canadian Women and Sport’s mission of advancing gender equity in sports and sports media representation; working towards increased participation and opportunities for young female athletes and leaders in sport.
