One Axe Family, Ice Climbers

Start small. Move for five minutes and build on that. You won’t regret it.
— Frederick & Christa, 45

When you’re rock climbing, you have to follow the rock. But when you’re ice climbing, you can go your own way. And that’s exactly what Frederick and Christa have done since starting One Axe Pursuits twenty years ago. Their family moves for health.

“Running an adventure company also means that our children have adventure available to them a hundred feet from the house,” Frederick says. Atarah and Akadius have followed in their parents’ bootsteps, learning to skate, ski, hike, rock climb, rappel, and zipline at an early age. Frederick even built a climbing wall in their home.

“We do a nightly family workout. It’s great for everyone's physical and mental health!”

Crista has gained a sense of empowerment from honing her climbing skills.

"When I found I could climb harder than the men, it was such a rush for me! Even if I am smaller or less strong, I can push myself and perform well."

One Axe has expanded to include corporate team building and work in the film and TV industry. “I love teaching ice climbing to beginners, especially those who then move on to mountaineering,” Frederick says. “We want to encourage people to stay in good health, to enjoy nature, and to experience the beauty of the outdoors.”
