Paul, Cancer Survivor

Fitness has played a major role in my life for years. I make sure to exercise every day.
— Paul, 39

I met Paul Silvestri while on assignment for the University of Toronto. We've stayed in touch because he inspires me so much. Despite all he’s been through, he stays active every day and keeps focused on the future. Paul moves for a better life.

“I was diagnosed with stage 4 testicular cancer in September 2017,” Paul says. “It had metastasized to my abdomen, lymph nodes and lungs, and my treatment consisted of chemotherapy and three surgeries. After my diagnosis, I developed a blood clot which made its way to my right lung, causing a pulmonary embolism that led to a cardiac arrest. I was given CPR and transferred to the ICU at Mount Sinai. Four days later, I was discharged and returned to Princess Margaret Hospital for my second cycle of chemo.”

“There are both health benefits and aesthetics that inspire me to stay active. Even though I’ve been taking good care of myself for many years, I feel like I’m in better shape and at a better weight now than before my diagnosis. I have more muscle, agility, better focus and less body fat, and as a result, I feel more engaged in all activities throughout my day.”
